Expert Advice - Choosing a Carpet Style

Jim Aaron, our VP of Merchandising for Carpet One Floor & Home, shares some information on the different carpet styles that are available.

Types of Carpet

Choosing a colour for your carpet is just one consideration you need to make, there are many other factors of carpeting that you should know. First off, you'll need to consider wear resistance and durability. Do you need a waterproof carpet that can handle spills and stains? Or maybe you need a commercial grade carpet that can withstand heavy traffic. At the same time, you need to balance performance with style, as your new carpet should fit perfectly into your overall design. You definitely want to make sure to choose a carpet that will look good and last long in your preferred setting.

How do you find the right balance between performance and style? The most important thing you need to do is choose the right type of carpet. There are five main types: level loop, patterned, textured, frieze, and plush.

Types of Carpet Fibres

Carpets are made up of fibres that are twisted into piles. Fibres can come from different materials like synthetic materials or natural materials. Fibres play an important role in carpet and can influence design, durability, and stain resistance. Synthetic fibres include nylon, polyester, olefin, and triexta. Nylon happens to be one of the most popular synthetic carpet fibres. It is durable, and can be treated to be stain resistant. We also offer carpets made with natural fibres, including wool. Wool comes from sheep and is a sustainable fibre, which makes it an eco-friendly option. Wool is also naturally hypoallergenic, resistant to staining, and can also resist show from wear.

Pet-Friendly Carpet

We offer pet friendly carpet for your home. There is no reason to sacrifice comfort for performance when you can have both. We offer stain resistant carpets that are specifically made with pets in mind. They feature the ultimate stain resistance and can easily be cleaned. Our H2O™ technology found in some of our exclusive carpet collections features a waterproof backing that stops pet accidents from reaching your subfloor. This prevents the growth of mould, mildew, and odour causing bacteria.

Where Can Carpet Be Installed?

Since carpets are known to be soft, cozy, and warm you can install them in bedrooms, dens, or you can even install them in living rooms as well. Our stain, wear and fade resistant carpets can be installed in places around your home that experience a lot of traffic like stairs, hallways, and even children’s playrooms and basements. We offer waterproof carpeting that can also be installed in basements, but be sure to avoid installing carpet in places like kitchens and bathrooms.
